LABOUR’S PLAN FOR BUILDING BRITAIN’S FUTURE
29 June 2009
The Prime Minister today published Building Britain’s Future, the Labour Government’s plan for a fairer, stronger and more prosperous country. Public service entitlements will for the first time be guaranteed to parents, patients and communities. New measures will also drive economic growth and create jobs. Stafford’s MP David Kidney says as an election approaches people will increasingly want to know more about the different political parties’ plans for Britain’s future:
"This Labour Government is clear about the best ways to involve communities in the fight against crime, improve patient and parent power, fight unemployment and get our economy best placed for the new industries that will form such an important part of our economy this century.
"What I particularly support is guaranteeing what parents, patients and communities should get from their public services. It’s about giving people more power and choice.
“Unlike in the last two recessions, we will not write off a whole generation of young people who want to work. Every young person who has been out of work for a year will have the guarantee of a job, training or work experience place. And given such a heroic commitment by the Government, rejecting an offer and living on benefits will not be an option.
“Patients will get enforceable entitlements to the highest standards of health care. Parents will be guaranteed an education individually tailored to their child, including a personal tutor for every pupil and 1-1 tuition for all those who need it. We will give local people more power to keep their neighbourhoods safe, including the right to hold the police to account at monthly beat meetings, to have a say on CCTV and a vote on how offenders pay back the community.
“The Government’s ambition for Britain’s future also extends to investing in 20,000 more affordable homes over the next two years, creating 45,000 additional jobs in the construction industry and investing in low carbon technologies, digital, life sciences and advanced manufacturing.”
